The UX Challenge

India’s leading car manufacturer aims to become a universal touchpoint for car owners, regardless of their vehicle’s brand. To achieve this, they are building a comprehensive ecosystem of services, starting with Smart Parking as the first step. The challenge was to design a parking app that breaks barriers, works seamlessly across cities, and offers a distinctly different experience from existing solutions.

The Design Process

A total of 48 participants were interviewed across 4 cities in India - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore. Visiting each city helped me better understand the parking situation. My days were spent walking around the city clicking photos of parked cars, parking signs and parking boards. We interviews the users about their parking problems, habits and hacks.

One problem. Multiple triggers

While all users faced the same problems with parking, each city had a distinctive problem. This helped me understand the different demographics and how to ensure everyone can find a parking easily, irrespective of the city they are in.

Non-daily cases are the low hanging fruits

Usually, user have figured out their parking situation at work, homes and the places they visit daily. It’s the places they visit occasionally where they need help with finding parking. Markets, Wedding venues, events, hospitals, temples, etc.

The Outcome

6 keys to an exceptional parking experience

Reduce cognitive load

Choose a default zoom level that provides a reasonable level of detail without overwhelming the user. Use clear and distinguishable symbols to represent parking spots.

Design for trust

How do you use UX to reduce anxiety about parking via an app? Social proof, good imagery and brand value.Close the feedback loop. Immediately asking users to review and rate the parking lot after their experience and showing these ratings to other users help them trust the parking lot more. During user research, 39/48 users said they would chose the parking lot based on the images.

Put the ‘smart’ in smart parking

Use information already available on your customers to improve their experience. For example, all cars do not fit in the same size parking spot, bigger cars need bigger parking spaces. Our design lets users select the car they are driving for the day.

Think outside the parking box

Why limit the app to just parking? Users love extra services you can avail in addition to parking the car. Users said they love the idea of getting services done while their car is parked so that they save time.

Aid quick decision making

Given the limited attention spans and time constraints, users tend to quickly scan content to identify relevant information and make rapid decisions about what to focus on. During user research, users said that the main information they would like to see is - images, parking charges & the distance. By putting this information upfront users can make quick and easy decision while booking a parking lot.

Gamify

Use gamification to make the app interactive and personal to the users. It helps in keeping the users engaged and motivated to use the app. For this app, we designed a ‘virtual garage.’ The idea is to let users pimp up their car with accessories they win as rewards by booking parking lots. This causes attachment towers your car avatar, just like instagram and snapchat avatars!
